Spirulina, the good skin algae!

Spirulina is loaded with vitamin A and antioxidants. it has been called a “Superfood”. Spirulina is an algae that has beneficial and powerful skin benefits, a type of green-blue algae.  It can be harvested anywhere that the culture can grow in water with access to sunlight. Naturally, it grows in freshwater rivers, lakes, and ponds that have lots of sunlight in moderate climates.

It helps:

  • Inflamed skin

  • Acne and blemishes

  • Aging skin or UV damaged skin

  • Shrinking the appearance of pores

Spirulina is highly nutritious, containing 8 essential amino acids. It is also high in protein, which is necessary for cell repair and growth. On top of that, spirulina contains a rare fatty acid known as gamma-linolenic acid.

Fatty acids, especially GLA, are known to promote the structural integrity of skin and decrease skin inflammation. That combined with being a rich source of antioxidants makes spirulina highly effective in the fight against free radicals.

Free radicals as we discussed in an earlier blog, wreak havoc on the skin, making it look older than it should. With the help of antioxidants, free radicals can be eliminated by increasing the skin’s metabolism, which is exactly what spirulina does. It helps your body produce new, healthy cells faster. When that happens, you’re left with fresh, glowing skin.

Here are the benefits of Spirulina for your skin:

1. Cleansing

Spirulina has chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is super cleansing and creates an environment that’s difficult for germs to grow in.

2. Acne

Spirulina has been proven to have anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the release of histamine by mast cells.

3. Protect your skin from UV Damage

Spirulina contains a handful of antioxidants benefits, mainly from the phycobiliprotein.

4. Anti Aging

As we age, our collagen production slows.  This slowing of collagen increases the formation of wrinkles.   Spirulina has been established in the skincare market to increase collagen production.

Our No. 40 Seaweed, Spirulina and Matcha Tea Mask is a hydrating spa mask that is rich in Chlorophyll and it makes a superb deep hydrating mask for the face, neck, and delicate area around the eyes.
