I discovered the benefits of Turmeric for my skin after having a discussion with my Indian friend following her traditional Indian wedding. Indian brides have long used turmeric body scrubs and face masks to purify and cleanse their bodies as well as provide a healthy glow by brightening their skin right before their weddings. Wow, I was blown how Turmeric gave the entire bridal party skin a fantastic glow.
What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a powerful herb that can replenish your skin in several ways; It amps up collagen production, heals wounds, and increase fibroblasts' levels. Ingredients in Turmeric may have a role in helping treat psoriasis, scleroderma, or prevent certain skin cancers, although more studies are needed to understand its utility better. This powder has exceptionally potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Turmeric is traditionally known as Indian saffron because of its deep yellow-orange color. Here in the states, we know Turmeric as the herb used as the main ingredient in curry. The color or pigment of Turmeric is caused by curcumin. Curcumin is a phytonutrient that contains extraordinary anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-aging properties abilities. Because of this, Turmeric can benefit your skin as a remedy for acne, eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, wrinkles, and dark circles under the eyes. Curcumin also works to suppress excess melanin production caused by sunlight, which is one of the causes of hyperpigmentation. In turn, it helps to reduce pigmentation and will give you a more even skin tone.
Benefits of Turmeric on the Skin:
1. Has Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits, Turmeric can work wonders on condition-riddled skin. It can also help reduce redness from blemishes and calm skin conditions like eczema and rosacea.
2. Fight off acne
Turmeric is excellent for acne because it is a natural antiseptic and helps to keep bacteria from spreading. It's especially useful when combined with apple cider vinegar, which has astringent properties, meaning it plays the same role as your average toner.
3. Reduces dark circles
It also stimulates circulation, which can help reduce puffiness and under-eye darkness caused by poor circulation.
4. Protect against sun damage & aging
Research presented at the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) 68th Annual Meeting shows that a moisturizing cream containing Turmeric could improve the appearance of fine lines and brown spots caused by sun damage. It also helps prevent loss of skin elasticity due to long-term UVB exposure.
A Facial Mask to Brighten the Skin
My favorite way to use Turmeric is in a facial mask. A turmeric mask with honey has terrific effects on the skin. Honey is a natural humectant that will moisturize and hydrate the skin along with Turmeric, and it is a gentle, nourishing treatment for your skin. Our No. 36 Turmeric Facial Mask is a perfect combination of Turmeric, honey, bentonite clay, and chamomile flower powder. All these ingredients work together to even out your skin tone and provide a fantastic glow to your skin. Our No. 32 Turmeric Balm filled with botanicals that fight free radicals, boost collagen production, and deeply hydrates skin. The soft texture melts into dry skin, leaving it soft and glowing.
A DIY Turmeric Scrub
To make a turmeric scrub, you will need:
- 1 cup dead sea salt
- 1 tbsp turmeric powder
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- Few drops of essential oil (optional).
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Massage the scrub in round movement over wet skin, rinse to achieve glowing skin.
A word of caution, this turmeric mask will stain clothing, washcloths, and even your skin. Be sure you don't use it right before a big meeting or date.
