How to Wash your Beard

Wash your face every day, but not your beard. How and when you wash your beard will drastically affect its fullness, softness, and appearance. Our bodies naturally produce oils that help keep our beards happy and healthy. If you wash your beard every day, you strip those oils from your beard leading to a dry and potentially damaged beard. Beard hair tends to be drier than the hair on your head. There are significantly fewer follicles on your face than there are on your head. This makes it more difficult for your beard to retain naturally produced oils and in turn makes the hair dryer.  Because of these reasons, on average we recommend washing your beard twice a week.

What to use to Clean your Beard

Natural Soap or Castille Soap - We recommend using a mild soap or a Castille based wash. Both of these can be used as a face wash and a beard wash. Our Face and Beard Wash is made with organic Castille soap with organic essential oil to clean your face and beard while leaving it soft and conditioned.

Shampoo  - Shampoo is  meant to clean your hair, but not your face. So if you plan to use a  shampoo you will need to wash your face with a separate face wash. Also, when you’re shampooing your hair every day, you’re stripping important oils out of it, which means it’s going to be dry and brittle.  Avoid shampoo every day, limit it to twice a week.

Also the temperature of water used for both washing and rinsing. Using very hot water can dry your skin which can give your problems in the proper development of the beard. It is best to use warm water when you start to rinse the beard. Using warm water is much better than cold as it will also open the pores of your skin.

After Cleaning your Beard

After your beard is cleaned, gently pat dry your beard and apply a beard oil or beard balm to moisturize and condition your beard.  Towel-dry your beard, scrape out a bit of balm with your thumbnail, run it through your beard with your hands, and you’ll be good to go. The beard oil and beard balm do the work of your daily moisturizer by locking in moisturizer, reducing itch, and making your face and beard happy, healthy and well hydrated.
